Overview
Access to quality medical treatment for low-income populations is a pressing concern, given their high rates of chronic illness and challenges in navigating the healthcare system. This issue leads to adverse health outcomes, including shorter lifespans, higher infant mortality, and increased mortality in the top 14 causes of death. Poverty is a root cause of poor health and a significant barrier to obtaining essential resources for well-being, such as nutritious food and standard healthcare.

Gone are the days, when free healthcare services, dispensaries, quality medications, and sanitary oversight were available to those with limited incomes. Churches, and local governments also played vital roles in promoting healthcare for the underserved. However, in the current landscape, high hospital fees pose a substantial challenge for a population struggling with unemployment and income instability.

How do people with no income receive medical treatment?

I discovered that, they really do not receive medical treatment because, like i said, they have no income and even when they do get medical treatment it is often not a quality medical treatment (normal process of seeing a doctor, getting tested and administering the right treatment).

Reason
Because the Nigerian private hospitals bill is way more than the minimum wage of an average nigerian and most general hospitals are really nothing to write home about.
So, how do they get better when they eventually fall sick?
Inorder to know how this individuals get treated since they can’t afford to pay hospital bill, I spoke to a few people (target audience).

Insights derived from the research

Alot of our target audience rely on local herbs whenever they needed any form of medical attention without making inquiries of what is really wrong with them.
Most of the local drugs vendors with little or no form of experience/ education sometimes sell to them drugs that does the opposite of it supposed function.
Auxillary nurses commence treatment without properly diagnosing, thereby causing more harm to their health, in most cases, it could lead to death.

My Takeaway
Working on this project was a really interesting one, as I had the opportunity to test my problem-solving skill and how to visualize the solution I could come up with. This is a project for social good and I am very hopeful that if we have a project like this out there it will do a lot of good for those who can’t afford the luxury of quality medical treatment.
I learnt how to iterate better and simplify every flow to make the users’ journey easier and have a better experience overall.
